Social Communication
Language of Connection
Social communication or pragmatic language refers to how children use language to connect, interact, and build relationships with others. This includes skills like taking turns in conversation, staying on topic, understanding social cues, interpreting tone of voice and body language, and adjusting communication based on the situation. Some children may have difficulty knowing what to say, how to enter or maintain conversations, or how to read and respond to others in social settings. You might notice your child struggles with back-and-forth conversation, misses social cues, prefers to play alone, or has difficulty navigating peer interactions.
These differences can impact friendships, classroom participation, and overall confidence in social situations. As social expectations increase with age, children may need additional support to build the skills needed to communicate effectively across settings. Strengthening social communication helps children feel more connected, understood, and successful in their interactions with others.
What to Expect in Speech Therapy
In therapy, we focus on building practical, real-life communication skills in a way that feels supportive and meaningful. Sessions are structured yet flexible, using play, conversation, and guided practice to help children learn how to initiate interactions, respond to others, and maintain conversations. We also work on understanding perspectives, recognizing social cues, and adjusting communication based on context.
We collaborate closely with parents to provide strategies that support social communication across everyday environments, including home, school, and community settings. Therapy is individualized to your child’s strengths and needs, helping them build confidence, develop meaningful connections, and navigate social situations more successfully in Grapevine and surrounding North DFW communities.
If your child is having difficulty with social interactions or communication, we’re here to help. Schedule an evaluation to better understand their strengths and how to support more confident, connected communication.
